2013 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS: ROMANE'S REVIEW

As one of the biggest and most anticipated award shows, the 2013 American Music Awards brought with it fun, laughter, high fashion, hits, misses and the crowning of an icon. With some celebs opting not to do red carpet there were crazy fashions on this year's carpet from lace to sequins. As usual the fashion principals prevailed, while some fell short.

With Katy Perry who enjoyed a stellar 2013 opening the show with her new single 'Unconditionally', Ms. Perry brought Japan to the Nokia Theatre boasting theatrics that set the tone for the night's festivities. Great she did. There was also a stellar showing from Best New Artist winner Ariana Grande who had the best vocal showing of the night performing her heartfelt ballad 'Tattooed Heart', I could tell she was nervous but she kept her composure and delivered. A standing ovation in the end from even the likes of Lady GaGa.

For the very first time the AMAs was adding another prestigious award- the Icon Award, and it was presented to Rihanna for her contribution to Pop music and influence on Joe Public. The Bajan beauty also gave an iconic performance of her hit 'Diamonds' backed by a 50-member orchestra before being presented with the award from her mother Monica Fenty.

Multiple winner Justin Timberlake was well received with his performance of 'Drink You Away', I thought it was an ok performance. Not to be outdone Christina Aguilera showed up on stage with A Great Big World singing their hit 'Say Something', great vocals. There were also performances from J.Lo, 'Backstabber' performer Ke$ha along with Pitbull, One Direction.

The AMA also welcomed back the Pied Piper R. Kelly to their stage performing his joint hit 'Do What You Want' with Lady Gaga. I love the song but I'm still looking for that performance to slay me. It just seemed...well...forced. But I love the scandalous theatrics. Pop riot Miley Cyrus got the honors to close the show this year, one can't deny the stellar year Cyrus had riding on the back of controversy. Clad in another outrageous number to perform her hit and my fave 'Wrecking Ball', separate and apart from tongue sticking kitty, Cyrus delivered.

A great show and a great end to the awards season. Was anyone missed?
