With Tessanne Chin lifting the title of the fifth season of the singing competition The Voice, many are now wondering what's next? Well the songbird through her win has inked a deal with Universal Music Group under which she'll put out records. But how can she stay relevant and not be blacklisted by these music labels?
Meet me below for more...
As a longtime Pop culture enthusiast, I've seen many a talented artist being blacklisted by record labels. Why? Because they fail to do what is required of them. Now I'm not here to talk bad about anybody but just spit the facts. Labels want you to be marketable, bankable and likeable, meaning you have to have a certain image in order to sell records. On top of that you have to bring in the big bucks in order for these labels to keep you and you also have to be likeable.
Again, the argument about who sings better, always get the attention goes into defunct, as we've seen many a Pop joke (Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber) being pushed afront because of their marketable image. Also they are some of Pop music's biggest marketing ploys. If I can remember a couple years ago Chin's sister Tami Chynn who was under Akon's RedOne label was blacklisted by the label and forced to sell her songs because she wasn't marketable enough. A then unknown Lady Gaga was pushed upfront. Today Gaga is one of music's biggest stars.
We've seen many a big-voiced, big-boned diva such as Jennifer Hudson and Adele told to shed a few pounds in order to be marketable. Marketable by way of endorsement deals, modeling contracts, magazine covers to name a few. For one to survive in mainstream music, you have to look the part, even if you don't sound the part.
As over the years we've seen the images of Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Beyonce being transformed into life-sized dolls as this is standard for them by these record labels. By doing this investors will become more interested in them and endorsement deals will be afforded to them even if they sing like they are gargling cement. One must also take into considering what would be the best record label for Tessanne at this time and not labels that will only talk the talk but don't walk the walk. With that being said, I'm sure the songbird has a group of well-seasoned pros in her surrounding that will carefully manage her and see who and what is right for her. I wish her the best.
