ROMANE BOUGIE: TOP 10 DANCEHALL SONGS OF 2013


With 2013 coming to an end, music locally has been nothing short of joyous for Dancehall listeners. This year has seen many a veteran posit themselves to stake claim as to why they are some of the genre's leading giants. With the re-emergence of Lady Saw and Macka Diamond, its fair to say the ladies enjoyed a stellar year as the men.

Meet me below for my Top 10 Dancehall Songs of 2013.

10. Samantha J- Tight Skirt


When Samantha J burst onto the scene with a re-worked version of Red Rat's hit 'Tight Up Skirt' she set many a tongue wagging with her provocative lyrics. Only 16 year old with lyrics that read "tight skirt yea you love the tightness...." many were wondering if we were getting another force-ripe dancehall pin-up, but with major support from radio stations and appearances on 106&Park, Ms. J can proudly say she's enjoyed a fruitful 2013. More to come from her in 2014. 


9. Konshens ft. J. Capri- Pull Up To Mi Bumper


When newcomer J. Capri tapped Konshens for the raunchy 'Pull Up To Mi Bumper' she knew she had a hit on her hand. With Konshens currently the poster boy Dancehall, and Capri the newbie, the two blended well to create one of the most listened to song of 2013, which has amassed a total of 6 million views since its arrival.


8. Vegas- Party Tun Up


He may not have seen his Beyonce led single 'Standing On The Sun' made the singer's final album cut but that didn't stop Vegas from excelling this year. Always a winner with these infectious dance cuts, Vegas found himself back at the top with 'Party Tun Up'


7. Kartel- Business


Currently incarcerated, Dancehall most celebrated Vybz Kartel showed us back in June that even though he's away, he's not silent. 'Business' has been on the playlist of many and continues to be a staple in many a dnacehall arena. 


6. Konshens- Couple Up


Konshens showed us that with or without competition he would still take 2013. How? Well producing a track such as 'Couple Up' and a solid backing visual, the singjay cemented himself as one of the genre's titans, releasing hit after hit. 


5. Lady Saw- Heels


Say what we may about Lady Saw but one can't deny how inescapable her comeback hit 'Heels' was. Living up to her "Queen" status, Saw delivered on one of the best songs of 2013 putting many a dancehall princess to shame. The video also serves as one of Saw's best to date. 


4. QQ ft. Venomous- One Drop


Undoubtedly one of the monster songs this past year was QQ's 'One Drop' was nothing short of a runaway hit. With twerking the new dance craze in the dancehall, 'Drop' couldn't come at a better time. With ladies competing to see who's the best one-dropper there is, the song continues to dominate on a party front. 


3. Macka Diamond- Dye Dye


No list could be complete without Macka Diamond's 'Dye Dye'. Whether she lacks in the performing department, Macka's ability to cook up hit songs is what's so great about the artist. Arguably the biggest hit by a female this year, Macka saw her hit took her to commercial heights, topping many a charts both locally and regionally. 


2. Bugle- Nuh Compatible


If ever you were looking for the song of the year, here it is! Bugle's 'Nuh Compatible' cemented him as one of Dancehall's most respected. A runaway hit on hand, Bugle had everyone telling their ex's how incompatible the relationship was. 


1. Busy Signal- Watch Out Fi This


Holding the #1 spot is Busy Signal's 'Watch Out Fi This'. Teamed with Major Lazor to produce what would become an international hit, Busy enjoyed a great year in dancehall. With support from Bajan queen Rihanna to his song being played in Pepsi ads. This is why Busy has the #1 dancehall song of 2013.
